Plans for transport month revealed

For the entire month of October, free vehicle testing of all public transport vehicles and trucks with a gross vehicle mass of 3 500 kg and above will be conducted at any of the Ekurhuleni Testing Centers.

In order to promote efficient, safe and reliable transport services, the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM) is rolling out a plan of action in line with celebrating Transport Month this October.

The EMM’s spokesperson, Mr Themba Gadebe, said for the entire month of October free vehicle testing of all public transport vehicles and trucks with a gross vehicle mass of 3 500 kg and above will be conducted at any of the Ekurhuleni Testing Centers.

The free testing will be done between 8:30am and 2:30pm on week days, except for Wednesdays when it will begin at 9:30am. No prior booking is required.

Nearby testing stations participating in the programme are:

Kempton Park – H Lewis Road, Spartan.

Boksburg – Reservoir Street.

“In breaking the bounds of the transport sector, which is a male-dominated field, the EMM will acknowledge and honour Ekurhuleni women involved in transport at an awards ceremony to be held on Saturday, October 10, at the Kempton Park town hall. On October 16, a licensing business gala dinner will be held in Germiston, where the Licensing Business Desk, opened in 2004, will be re-launched to highlight the convenience it offers to businesses,” he said.

Mr Gadebe said a transport indaba is also on the cards and is planned by faith-based organisations.

“These organisations have taken it upon themselves to do their bit in creating awareness on the matter and will, to this end, congregate for the indaba on October 26 at the Germiston City Hall,” he said.

To close off transport month, the EMM will unveil the new Ramaphosa Taxi Rank to residents of the informal settlement on Friday, October 30.
