UPDATE: Second shootout rocks Bedfordview suburb

The Bedfordview SAPS has confirmed that a second shooting in one week took place in Bedfordview on Saturday.

According to the Bedfordview SAPS communications officer, Sergeant Mduduzi Nhlabathi, a 43-year-old-man who had collected an undisclosed amount of cash from a Chinese national in Eastgate was accosted by an unknown number of suspects. The suspects opened fire on the car he was driving, forcing it to an abrupt halt.

He confirmed this after the NEWS received ports of a shooting at about 4.30pm at the Sasol service station along Van Buuren Road in Bedfordview on Saturday.

Sgt Nhlabathi said the suspects continued to shoot in the direction of the driver. The suspects took the cash from the victim and drove off.

The man sustained a bullet wound to his stomach and was transported to the Union Hospital. He condition was unknown at the time of going to print.

The Bedfordview SAPS is investigating a case of attempted murder and armed robbery.

Saturday’s shooting came less than three days after a shoot-out in Bedfordview on Thursday morning.

A security guard was shot at when he tried to help motorists involved in a vehicle collision at the corner of Van Buuren and Kloof roads in Bedfordview on Thursday morning.

According to Sgt Nhlabathi, a BMW rammed into a Mercedes Benz at the intersection.

“The guard stopped his car and went to the cars involved in the accident. As he was getting closer to the cars, the occupants of the BMW fired shots at him. A shootout ensued. The occupants of the BMW took the guard’s vehicle and fled the scene,” he said.

He was unable to confirm the number of occupants in the BMW. No injuries were reported.

Sgt Nhlabathi could not confirm reports that the BMW was involved in a residential burglary prior to the shooting.
