Heat wave – be cautious for the next week

Look out for these symptoms in people.

With heat wave conditions currently being experienced across several parts of the country, including Gauteng, ER24 urge people to be cautious.

The SA Weather Service has warned that these high temperatures are likely to last until the weekend. Maximum temperatures will remain at around 33°C every day.

Heat exhaustion could lead to serious complications, including a heat stroke which could be life-threatening.

ER24 offers the following tips:

1. Stay well hydrated by drinking a lot of water.

2. Keep a close eye on babies, the elderly and children. Ensure they stay well hydrated as well.

3. Remember to ensure pets have a cool place to relax and cool clean water to drink as well.

4. Try to stay out of direct sunlight.

5. Wear the appropriate clothing and ensure you use sunscreen.

6. Limit participation in outdoor activities. If you plan on participating in outdoor activities, ensure you rest and keep hydrated.

7. If you are going to spend time in a pool, ensure your safety and that of children around you. Ensure that they are supervised while around and in the pool.

8. Do not leave children and pets in a vehicle even with a window open.

Severe heat stroke or exhaustion signs or symptoms include severe headache, weakness or disorientation, nausea or vomiting, muscle cramps and severe thirst.

Monitor people who have these symptoms. Persisting symptoms should be taken seriously and medical assistance should be sought.
