UPDATE: ‘Edenvale High pupil not suspended for shaving hair’ – Dr Harmer

"We display a history of school support and we have events to create awareness and acknowledge circumstances such as cancer awareness."

Following the recent allegations about a pupil in Edenvale High School being suspended for shaving her hair and being told to wear a bandanna, the school’s principal, Dr Larry Harmer commented on the widespread social media storm by confirming the pupil was not suspended.

The pupil shaved her hair in solidarity with her friend’s Leukemia diagnosis.

Dr Harmer told the NEWS the pupil was never suspended or punished.  He said Edenvale High School has always supported similar initiatives.

“There are policies at the school with regards to joining certain initiatives. Pupils need to let the school know. We display a history of school support and we have events to create awareness and acknowledge circumstances such as cancer awareness,” said Dr Harmer.

“If a pupil feels strongly about a cause, then we do understand their support for the cause. However the correct channels need to be followed in doing so. The pupil is at school and she is wearing a bandanna. It is stated in our school policies that pupils are not allowed to shave their hair. However if we are informed then there is no problem,” said Dr Harmer.
