Volunteers team up to remove illegal advertising

The ever-increasing number of illegal signboards is making it difficult for customers to find the business.

Ms Sharon Lendrum-Frittelli thanked local businesses and other volunteers for assisting her in ridding the area of illegal signage.

“We managed to get three teams together for our regular removal of signage on September 19. Three vehicles were filled with removed posters, which made a visible difference in the suburbs. It was very rewarding,” said Ms Lendrum-Frittelli.

She said when the NEWS previously published an article on September 9, suggesting that companies in the Sebenza Industrial area participate, many were helpful and volunteered their time to assist.

“UD Filtration in Ingwe Road offered to help, as well as Ms Doris Gemmell and four staff members who removed four bakkie loads of illegal signage on September 20,” she said.

In addition, Ms Lendrum-Fritelli said Mr Henry Sole and another volunteer removed signage along Mopedi and Venda roads in Sebenza.

“They managed to fill one bakkie load as well. Although only seven or eight kilometers of the area was cleaned, this haul of five loads has made a huge impact on the cleanliness of the area,” she said.

Ms Doris Gemmell said the five kilometer walk in the sun and fresh air was most enjoyable and she would like to encourage other companies in the area to join in and make a difference as well.

According to Ms Gemmell, the ever-increasing number of illegal signboards is making it difficult for customers to find the business. The company board is often dwarfed and over-crowded by the scourge of illegal signage in the area.

“Real Estate companies are by far the largest culprits of this in the Sebenza area and the only way to reduce or stop this practice is to ensure that there are ongoing removals. In the suburbs, we have seen a dramatic improvement as companies are finally beginning to realise that we will not tolerate this non-adherence to the Outdoor Advertising Bylaws and hopefully with time, this will be realised in the industrial area as well,” said Ms Lendrum-Fritelli.

She also thanked Ms Gemmell and the staff on behalf of the Poster Buster volunteers.
