Petrol card scam uncovered

It was established that the card was fraudulently used to fill different cars and many employees were involved in this.

Ten staff members of a petrol station along Wordsworth Avenue in Senderwood were recently arrested for fraud.

The Bedfordview SAPS communications officer, Sergeant Mduduzi Nhlabathi, said the arrests followed investigations involving a petrol card allocated to a Gauteng Provincial Government vehicle.

“The petrol station noticed a trend where a certain petrol card assigned to a government car was swiped to fill different vehicles at different times at the same petrol station,” he said.

He said during the investigation it was established that the card was fraudulently used to fill different cars and many employees were involved in this.

“It was first established that some of the car registrations and fuel grades on the vouchers did not match the vehicle the card was intended for. The footage viewed also showed that the actual vehicles were not at the forecourt during the transactions. Sometimes the card would be used later for the car it was intended for,” he said.

He said the arrested employees included cashiers and petrol attendants.

Sgt Nhlabathi said the employees will appear in court soon.
