Attempted fraud by “Microsoft representative” shakes resident

"The suspect managed to gain access to the victim's online banking system. Fortunately, when they tried to transfer the money from his account, his bank took notice."

The Bedfordview SAPS said it is investigating a case of attempted fraud after a man tried to transfer money from a resident’s online banking system.

According to Sergeant Mduduzi Nhlabathi, the resident, a 24-year-old, was at home when he received a call from the suspect who pretended to be a representative from Microsoft.

“The call was reportedly regarding an error on the complainant’s laptop. He was given steps to follow to have the alleged error corrected.

“The suspect managed to gain access to the victim’s online banking system. Fortunately, when they tried to transfer the money from his account, his bank took notice and called the complainant,” said Sgt Nhlabathi.

He said the transaction was stopped.

Sgt Nhlabathi encouraged members of the public to be careful when buying goods online.

“Residents must always remember to not make full payments to people or businesses before the goods are received. Always make sure you shop only on websites that are deemed as safe. Payment methods must always be above board. When in doubt, ask for assistance either from your bank or the SAPS. Stay safe while shopping online,” he said.

Investigations are currently underway to apprehend the suspect involved in the case.
