Humphreys addresses illegal dump site

She sought the help of a TLB machine to temporarily barricade the gate with a dead tree.

In order to halt dumping activity at one part of the Bill Stuart Nature Reserve, the ward 20 councillor, Clr Jill Humphryes, said she decided to take matters into her own hands.

Last Monday, Clr Humphreys told the NEWS she was tired of people doing as they please.

“It is upsetting to see people dumping here with no consideration whatsoever of the impact it has on the environment. I have also asked residents to report incidents to the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD), and to take photos of the perpetrators, but that has not helped because it’s not all the time that residents are looking at the activities taking place in the park,” said Clr Humphreys.

She sought the help of a TLB machine to temporarily barricade the gate with a dead tree.

“Hopefully this will stop people from coming in to dump. I also hope that seeing the barricade will be a reminder that dumping is illegal,” she said.

The part of the reserve affected is the corner of Kloof Road and AG de Witt Drive.

Some of the items dumped included sand and building rubble.

Meanwhile, Clr Humphreys said she had plans to have the mountain cleaned of alien invader species. She met with officials from the Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Rural Development and the Department of Environment and Forestry last Tuesday.

“A lot of the crime emanates from the thickets of black wattle that infest a belt along the back of the housing. So clearing these species out will mean less places to hide for would-be criminals,” said Clr Humphreys.
