Brazen thieves drive off in SPCA vehicle

"The two men went back to the Dodge and drove off, followed by the third man in the SPCA's vehicle. The entire event was captured and recorded on the camera system."

An Isuzu bakkie belonging to the Bedfordview and Germiston SPCA was recovered after the vehicle was stolen on September 10.

The incident happened when a man allegedly opened the back gate of the SPCA’s property and was spotted walking into the pound area.

The man said he had lost his dog and he was directed to the front office. The man then left the premises.

“A few minutes later the man returned, accompanied by two accomplices, who drove onto the premises with a blue Dodge Calibre. The staff spotted the men again, but believed they had come back from the front office to collect their dog. Two of the men calmly walked in different directions, while the third walked to the bakkie which was unlocked. The two men went back to the Dodge and drove off, followed by the third man in the SPCA’s vehicle. The entire event was captured and recorded on the camera system,” read a statement issued by the SPCA.

The vehicle had a tracking system and it was located en route to City Deep.

The vehicle was spotted and stopped on the N1 South outside Soweto by a Johannesburg Metro Police officer, who noticed the SPCA markings on the car.

Two suspects were apprehended at the scene. A third suspect managed to escape. The vehicle was damaged as a result of the suspects searching for, and removing, the tracking device.
