Pupil receives Springbok Scout Award.

Carl had to lead a weekend camp, which included training younger Scouts, and he had to prepare and serve a three course meal using only a fire.

Edenvale resident and a matriculant at Jeppe High School for Boys, Carl Holmes was presented his Springbok Scout Award on August 31.

This award is the highest achievement earned by Scouts in South Africa.

He achieved the Springbok award as he managed to complete the expectations of leading a three day and two night hike that covered over 30km, which he completed at the Vredefort Meteorite Dome.

Carl had to lead a weekend camp, which included training younger Scouts, and he had to prepare and serve a three course meal using only a fire.

He also had to undertake a community service project as well as pioneer a structure.

Carl chose to build the Wright Flyer and with a team of five younger Scouts using over 100 lashings, they managed to recreate the first plane to fly, using gum poles and ropes.

Carl joined the Harmelia Gardens Air Scout Troop as a Cub in 2004, where he achieved his Leaping Wolf Badge and moved onto Scouts at the age of 11.

He has had the privilege of flying a Jabaroo light aircraft at Kitty Hawk in 2013.

The Scouts has afforded Carl many experiences through Scouting and he has attended numerous adventures, camps, hikes and airshows.

He has also hiked the Cedarberg, attended PLTU – the toughest leadership training course for young people in SA, and has been invited back to staff PLTU on three occasions.
