Sebenza Cemetery to get a new gate

Residents also said the fence needed to be repaired after it was allegedly smashed by cars.

The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM) will order a new gate for the Sebenza Cemetery.

This came after the NEWS received concerns from residents regarding the gate at the cemetery, which was left open.

Residents also said the fence needed to be repaired after it was allegedly smashed by cars.

Mr Themba Gadebe, the EMM’s spokesperson, said the damaged portion of the fence does not form part of the cemetery.

The ward councillor, Clr Heather Hart, said Sebenza SAPS vehicles also park at the cemetery.

“I have noticed that vehicles have taken to driving into the cemetery, right up to the gravestones, and I have watched people who are not visiting any grave sites simply ‘chilling’ in their cars with music blaring. This is most disturbing and I was under the impression that no vehicles were allowed to drive in there except municipal vehicles. The gate is always open and it seems SAPS vehicles are also parking there,” said Clr Hart.

Mr Gadebe said the municipality will investigate the matter; however, once a gate has been installed and kept locked, this activity would stop.

He also said a gate had been installed previously, but had been stolen.

“However, the EMM will order a new one,” he said.

The Sebenza SAPS communications officer, Constable Sharon Mahamba-Tsotsotso, said the station’s vehicles are always parked inside the police station.

“Our vehicles are always parked inside our premises because there is enough parking. We don’t have any reason to go and park our cars in the cemetery,” said Const Mahamba-Tsotsotso.
