Hijackings on the rise in Yeoville

Most of the incidents occurred in isolated areas.

The SAPS has urged motorists to take precautions when driving in Yeoville.

This follows an increase in the number of the hijackings in the area over the past two months.

The Yeoville SAPS communications officer, Constable Thabo Malatji, said in some weeks, three to five incidents were reported.

“In some weeks we would have nothing reported, but other weeks we would have more than three incidents,” he said.

According to Const Malatji, most of the hijackings occurred in the more isolated parts of the area.

“Sometimes people park in isolated and poorly lit streets. While they are concentrating on what they are talking about, they become vulnerable. You need to be aware of your surroundings at all times. In almost all the incidents, the suspects walk in a group of three or four armed men. They walk around scouting for their next targets,” he said.

Const Malatji said some motorists were hijacked in their driveways.

“We need to be aware all the time. As you drive to your home and you see suspicious people walking around, do not drive in. Continue driving to a safer place. Call the police. Ask them to come and verify. If they turn out to be innocent people passing by, do not worry, it is called taking precautionary measures,” said Const Malatji.

Const Malatji said that if one is confronted by hijackers, you should cooperate.

“Your life is more important than any vehicle. In most cases you will see them when they are pointing a firearm at you. That means they may shoot you. Give them the car. As they drive away, call the police. Your car’s description will be circulated. It might be found before it goes too far. If you have a tracking system, call your tracking company. A vehicle may be recovered but not a life,” he said.

Const Malatji said all cars have been targeted.

“It looks like all vehicles were a target in the past months. The suspects walk around looking for an opportunity to strike,” he said.

Const Malatji said the most affected streets include parts of Hunter Street and Bezuidenhout Street, De la Rey Street and Elis Street.
