Men nabbed for truck hijacking

While the driver and his assistant waited for the mechanic, the suspects approached the truck and told the men to open up for them.

The Bedfordview SAPS arrested two men last Tuesday for a truck hijacking.

According to the Bedfordview SAPS spokesperson, Sergeant Mduduzi Nhlabathi, the driver of the truck was parked near the R24/N12 split at about 10pm after a mechanical failure.

“The driver said the truck was mixing diesel and water. He called his boss who then dispatched a mechanic to assist,” said Sgt Nhlabathi.

While the driver and his assistant waited for the mechanic, the suspects approached the truck and told the men to open up for them.

“The suspects smashed one of the windows to gain access and once inside, they pointed a firearm at the victims and told them to lie down. One of the suspects started the truck and it moved slowly,” he said.

Sgt Nhlabathi said the mechanic arrived and parked in front of the truck.

“The suspects then jumped out, through the window, and ran. The victims screamed for help and nearby security guards heard them. The security guards, together with police officers, responded. The victims showed the officers the direction the suspects took and they followed up, leading to the arrests,” said Sgt Nhlabathi.

Upon searching the suspects, the police officers found a toy gun which was used to rob the men.

The men are suspected to have been working with other people in a separate car.

“The victims heard the suspects ask, in vernacular, why they were passing them shortly after a white car drove past at high speed,” said Sgt Nhlabathi.

The suspects are both foreign nationals.

At the time of going to press, the men remained in police custody and face charges of truck hijacking.
