IPID heading to Edenvale

The IPID is an independent and impartial body, separate from the police.

The Independent Police Investigating Directorate (IPID) is set to visit Edenvale.

This follows the number of alleged cases of brutality made against some members of the Edenvale Police Station.

The DA arranged for the IPID to visit the Edenvale Police Station on Saturday, August 5.

MP Mike Waters said the IPID is an independent and impartial body, separate from the police. The organisation is tasked with investigating allegations of criminal offenses against police officers and to make the appropriate recommendations.

“If we want to rid Edenvale of rogue cops, we need people who have been affected to have the courage to come forward and lodge complaints,” said MP Waters.

According to MP Waters, the arrangements were made in order to assist residents with lodging complaints.

“After receiving a number of grievances from the community about police officers at the Edenvale Police Station, as promised, the DA has arranged for the IPID to come to Edenvale in order to make it easier for all people wishing to lodge complaints against the police for assault, bribery, intimidation or any other illegal activity,” said MP Waters.

The meeting will take place on September 5 at 10am. It will be held at the Edenvale Community Centre.

Residents should bring any supporting documents or evidence of brutality with them. This would also include medical records, pictures or videos.

IPID officials will open the meeting by explaining to residents what their role is. They will provide details of the complaints process and the fact that all cases will be dealt with in a way that ensures complainants’ anonymity throughout the investigation.
