Bedfordview family robbed after leaving gate open

"Two armed men reportedly jumped out and demanded that everyone go to the main bedroom."

A family in Morninghill fell victim to house robbers last Wednesday.

According to Sergeant Mduduzi Nhlabathi, the spokesperson for the Bedfordview SAPS, the gate was left opened for a cat that was outside.

“The homeowner told the police that while he sat reading a newspaper, an Audi A6 with no registration number drove into his yard. Two armed men reportedly jumped out and demanded that everyone go to the main bedroom,” he said.

Sgt Nhlabathi said when the victim told the robbers he did not have keys to the safe, they threatened to shoot him.

“He told them to go ahead. He told the police the safe contained family jewellery, R5 000 and $30 000 in cash,” said Sgt Nhlabathi.

“We cannot emphasise how careful people need to be. Home owners must also educate their employees to remain vigilant at all times. Keep all doors and gates locked, even if you are sitting outside.”

Meanwhile, another Morninghill family was robbed in June, after also leaving the gate open while cleaning the yard.
