IPID to meet with Edenvale victims of police brutality

"If we want to rid Edenvale of rogue cops, we need people who have been affected to have the courage to come forward and lodge complaints."

The Democratic Alliance has arranged for the Independent Police Investigating Directorate (IPID) to visit Edenvale in order to make it easier for all people who wish to lodge complaints against the police for assault, bribery, intimidation or any other illegal activity.

The IPID is an independent and impartial body, separate from the police, and is tasked with investigating allegations of criminal offenses against police officers and to make the appropriate recommendations.

“There have been dozens of alleged cases of brutality against some members of the Edenvale Police Station. The DA asked the IPID to come to Edenvale on a Saturday in order to make it easier for residents to lodge complaints. This comes after we received a number of grievances from the community about police officers at the Edenvale Police Station,” said Member of Parliament, Mike Waters.

“If we want to rid Edenvale of rogue cops, we need people who have been affected to have the courage to come forward and lodge complaints,” he said.

What residents should bring with them:

Any supporting documents that provide evidence of police brutality or bribery, such as medical records, pictures or videos.

Meeting procedures:

IPID officials will open the meeting by explaining to residents what their role is. They will provide details of the complaints process and the fact that all cases will be dealt with in a way that ensures complainants’ anonymity throughout the investigation.
