Locals give back to residents

Ms Dorothea Bekker and Ms Denise Stewart have discovered the joy that comes with giving.

Each week, the pair volunteers at the Rand Aid Association’s Ron Smith Care Centre, spending quality time with the residents.

They do simple occupational therapy activities with the residents, or simply lend an ear or hold the hand of an older person.

When their time is up, they stroll over to the nearby dam on the grounds of the Elphin Lodge retirement village, where the care centre is based, and spend time relaxing while they feed the waterfowl and other birds. Ms Bekker has been a volunteer at the care centre for three years while Ms Stewart started in April.

“If I get one smile, that’s reward enough,” said Ms Bekker, of what motivates her to give of her time and energy so regularly.
