The accident took place at Gillooly’s Interchange.

On-scene information suggests the driver of the taxi lost control and hit a barrier before the taxi rolled and landed on its roof.

Mr William Ntladi, the spokesperson for the Ekurhuleni Emergency Services, said the cause of the accident is yet to be investigated. However, unconfirmed reports at the scene are that the taxi suffered a mechanical failure.

All occupants sustained serious injuries and were transported to different hospitals in Ekurheleni.

“The driver was, however, airlifted to the Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Hospital. He is in a critical condition,” said Mr Ntladi.

All lanes of the N3 North were closed to traffic to allow the chopper to land and load the patient.
