Ward 18 feedback meeting

"The funding of the Edenvale Child and Family Welfare Society is an ongoing concern".

An open ward meeting held last week provided the opportunity for residents to be informed on matters currently dealt with in the Edenvale ward.

Committee member, Ms Nikki van der Walt (portfolio women and children), reported that the funding of the Edenvale Child and Family Welfare Society is an ongoing concern.

“Another problem is children begging at the intersections. We appeal to the community to not give them money. Then they will not be at the intersections,” said Ms Van Der Walt.

Mr Clive Tyson (portfolio education) said there are excellent schools in the Edenvale area but he also expressed concern over schools being overcrowded.

“Schools are usually built to accommodate more or less 750 children, but there are well over 1 000 pupils in the schools,” said Mr Tyson.

“Due to the number of apartments in the Greenstone area, and no schools in that area, the residents seek schools in Edenvale,” he said.

Ms Margy Peddar dealt with environmental development and appealed to the community to report collapsed storm water systems.

“Businesses should also refrain from putting chemicals into the water because the effluent goes into the rivers,” she said.

Ward 18 councillor, Clr Heather Hart, said environmental degradation includes air quality and sound quality.

Mr Tony Bishop, in the health and social development portfolio, expressed concern about illegal bottle stores in Edenvale.

“There are three illegally situated bottle stores in proximity to churches and schools,” he pointed out.

Ms Sharon Lendrum-Frittelli, in the city planning and economic development portfolio, said illegal signage in Edenvale is also a problem.

She appealed to the community to remove illegal signage when noticed.

“We have a group of people who do the Poster Busters as a group project for the community. It appeals to teenagers to join in. We drive around removing illegal signage. Our group meets every third Saturday of the month,” said Ms Lendrum-Frittelli.

A resident, Mr Gerald, expressed concern about the potholes in Edenvale.

“I have an open manhole near my home that was dug up after there was a water leakage. It has been nine weeks and they still have not sealed the hole,” he said.

Clr Hart said there are various complaints about the state of the roads and that the contractor is only able to deliver four bags of tar at a time.

Ward 18 includes Elma Park, Hurlyvale, the Avenues from Horwood to Hendrik Potgieter, which includes the CBD, Edenglen, Clarens Park, De Klerkshof, Isandovale, Sebenza and Illiondale.
