JUST IN: SAPS hunt would-be robbers armed with AK47s

Suspects, who fled in a white Audi, used AK47s.

Bedfordview SAPS has been confirmed it is investigating a case of attempted murder after a failed robbery and hijacking attempt earlier this evening in Bedfordview.

Although details are still sketchy, reports indicate that a security guard, called to provide back-up, was injured when he tried to take cover when the suspects opened fire.

Police spokesperson, Sergeant Mduduzi Nhlabathi said the incident took place at Shell garage, west of Eastgate. He said the suspects, who fled in a white Audi, used AK47s.

On its Twitter account, centre management at Eastgate Shopping Centre said, “[we] confirm that suspects attempted to hijack a civilian’s vehicle on a public road outside the centre”.

Bedfordview Community Policing Forum chairperson, Mr Gavin Henry said the targeted victim was a Chinese man.
