Mrs Lumley dies

The DA Gauteng Shadow MEC for Health, Mr Jack Bloom, said he was distressed to read the news.

The DA in Gauteng has called on the provincial health department to investigate the Hillbrow Clinic.

This follows the death of Mrs Magdalena Maria Lumley (96) from Jeppestown on Friday, August 14, at the Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Hospital.

She was in the hospital for three weeks before she died.

The DA Gauteng Shadow MEC for Health, Mr Jack Bloom, said he was distressed to read the news in the EXPRESS.

“She died after being discharged prematurely from the Hillbrow Clinic, following a head injury when she fell at her Jeppe home on July 23. Her daughter, Ms Janice Le Roux, said she received a call from the clinic after 6pm. Instead of keeping her overnight for observation, they said if she was not fetched she would sleep outside,” he said.

“Nobody at the clinic gave Ms Le Roux any details about her health status and she was only given six pain killers,” said Mr Bloom.

Mrs Lumley died after three weeks in hospital.

“It seems quite evident that she should never have been declared fit for discharge by the Hillbrow Clinic, whose staff have been callous in this matter,” he said.

Mrs Le Roux said Mrs Lumely would be cremated and her memorial service would be held on August 30 at the NG Kerk in Kensington at 8:30am.
