Couple still roaming streets, begging

Alleged couple scamming in Edenvale

Residents reported a couple scamming residents in Edenvale.

Ms Sue Zanin told the NEWS that the couple is allegedly still scamming residents in the area, following an article published by the NEWS in its July 22 edition.

The NEWS then warned residents of a possible scam by a couple walking the streets of Edenvale with three children, going door to door and asking for money for a return trip to East London.

When approached by the couple, Ms Zanin said she wanted to try and help them.

“The couple told my husband and I that his mom’s church has tried to raise funds for them to return to Port Elizabeth. We then helped them and bought the tickets, as well as put them on the train. My husband however, spotted them in Kensington, near the Jeppe Police Station, so they left the train in Germiston that same day,” said Ms Zanin.

“My main concern is the well-being of the children,” she said.

Councillor Heather Hart also previously mentioned that the couple told a similar story, asking for money for a return trip to East London.

A third resident, who wishes to remain anonymous, informed the NEWS that he was told a similar story and gave them a total of R800. He managed to take a photo of the family and sent it to the NEWS.

The NEWS managed to contact the man telephonically and several interviews were scheduled with the NEWS, however none of these appointments were met by the couple.
