Would-be robber carrying toy gun shot, killed

A man and his family were holding a braai when four men jumped over the wall, into the family's yard.

A man carrying a toy gun was shot and killed in Clacton Road, Kensington last night at about 6.50pm during an attempted robbery.

A man and his family were holding a braai when four men jumped over the wall, into the family’s yard.

One of the four threatened to kill one of the family members and the 28-year-old man procceeded inside the house and took out a firearm and fired shots.

The suspects ran back to the wall and jumped over the wall again. One of them failed to do so. The man’s girlfriend phoned ADT, the SAPS and paramedics. The injured suspect was certified dead on the scene.

When police arrived at the scene, they found the toy gun. Jeppe SAPS later found an injured man at the corner of Eight Street and 11th Avenue. He told Jeppe police officers he was shot by suspects next to Rhodes Park when they robbed him. The injured man was transported to Johannesburg Hospital.

Cleveland SAPS detectives are investigating possible links between the incidents.

An inquest docket was opened.
