Men trade bulletproof vests for mops

Some male officers at the Bedfordview SAPS traded their bullet proof vests for the mop last Friday.

Several male officers at the Bedfordview SAPS traded their bulletproof vests for mops last Friday.

The men cleaned the station in celebration of Women’s Month.

According to Captain Carel Nimb, head of the station’s logistics department, the initiative was brought about as part of honouring the women at the station who always make sure the station is tidy and clean.

The Bedfordview SAPS spokesperson, Sergeant Mduduzi Nhlabathi, encouraged women to not only know their rights, but to exercise them.

“No man is allowed to lay his hands on you. Report abuse of any kind to the police,” said Sgt Nhlabathi.

He said the station has a zero tolerance approach to domestic violence and is using the month of August to place an emphasis on the importance of reporting such cases.

“Women at times feel that they are obligated to stay in a relationship for the sake of children or whatever reasons. Don’t make excuses to stay in an abusive relationship. Get it reported before it is too late,” said Sgt Nhlabathi.
