School celebrates Mandela Day

Bedfordview’s Huggy Bears Pre-Primary School celebrated International Mandela Day in style.

The children, together with their teachers, came to school dressed in different South African cultural wear.

According to the school’s principal, Ms Lisa Correia, for this year’s installment of Mandela Day, which was celebrated on July 18, parents at the school were asked to donate wool.

“I then knitted squares to the blankets which were stitched together by Ms Rosa Fonseca. We donated the end products to a creche at an informal settlement near Primrose,” said Ms Correia.

The pupils sang the national anthem as well as other songs to celebrate the first democratically-elected president of the country.

Ward 20 councillor, Clr Jill Humphreys, thanked Ms Correia for her contribution to the poor and also for teaching the children about giving back to the less fortunate.

Ms Correia said the school has more plans for Christmas as well as next year’s Mandela Day.
