Hijackers caught red-handed

The suspects were found shortly after 8am, offloading the cargo from the delivery vehicle into a silver Toyota Quantum and Toyota Corolla

A toy gun, which is suspected to have been used to hijack a tobacco delivery vehicle in Newtown, was recovered when six men were arrested in Yeoville on Wednesday, July 1.

The Yeoville SAPS communications officer, Constable Thabo Malatji, said the suspects were found shortly after 8am, offloading the cargo from the delivery vehicle into a silver Toyota Quantum and Toyota Corolla, next to Arthur and Mons streets in Yeoville.

“The SAPS received information about the hijacking taking place. When we arrived, we found the suspects offloading cigarettes into the Toyota Quantum. They were all arrested,” he said.

He said a toy gun was recovered during the arrest.

At the time of going to print, Const Malatji could not confirm if the men had been linked to other crimes in the area.

He said more would be revealed as the investigation progressed.
