Cleveland officer killed during shootout with suspects

It was the second time the officer become involved in a shoot out with the suspects this year.

A Cleveland Police Station Warrant Officer was shot and killed this morning during a shootout with armed robbers.

According to the station’s communications officer, Constable (Const) Mpho Mashakane, the officer and his colleague were providing back up to officers attending to a robbery in progress. “Officers from Jeppe Police Station responded to a business robbery taking place next to Jeppe hostel and my colleagues were [called] for backup. A shoot out ensued,” said Const Mashakane.

She said the deceased officer was shot twice on the upper body and died in hospital.

Const Mashakane said it was the second time the officer become involved in a shoot out with the suspects this year. ”We lost a hero, a brave officer. He was one of the strongest pillars at the station,” she said.

Details on the identity of the officer will only be published after his family has been notified.
