From canvas to the wall with pastel painting

"It is important to understand the basics, from the canvas to the wall. Hence, the basic principles of pastel painting are important in order to create the perfect painting."

One of South Africa’s well-known pastel artists, Mr David Johnson, visited the Edenvale Community Centre on June 20.

The Paint & Palette Group invited Mr Johnson to host a demonstration for its members.

Mr Johnson has been painting since 1987.

He commenced his career as a professional artist in 1993.

Mr Johnson said it was his fifth exhibition for the organisation.

“It is important to understand the basics, from the canvas to the wall. Hence, the basic principles of pastel painting are important in order to create the perfect painting,” said Mr Johnson.

The public relations officer for the Paint & Palette Group, Ms Denuta Puzilewicz, said their organisation represents many artists in their own right.

“The Paint & Palette Group has meetings every third Saturday in a month. We set out to demonstrate different mediums of paint,” said Ms Puzilewicz.

“We also allow the members to participate in workshops, as this gives them an opportunity to learn how to do different types of paintings,” she said.

Mr David Johnson was able to show the members who attended how his pastel art comes alive.
