Water meter thieves hit Malvern again

“Stealing water meters costs the metro and inconveniences residents,” said Clr Mike Spadino.

Malvern residents staying along Galteemore Street woke up without water today.

This comes after three water meters were stolen along the street.

The ward 118 councillor, Clr Mike Spadino, called on Johannesburg Water to change the current water meters to the new plastic ones.

“The old water meters with copper have to be removed before they get stolen. Replace them with the plastic ones. There is a convincing assumption that these water meters are being stolen for copper. Use the plastic ones to make them worthless to criminals,” said Clr Spadino.

He said waiting for the meters to be stolen is inconveniencing residents and is costly to the City of Johannesburg (CoJ).

“Imagine, today I received a call from a resident who was returning from working a night shift. Say the water meter was stolen at around 3am. At 6am water was still gushing out. In just those three hours, how much water have we lost? Millions of litres. If it takes more than three hours to fix, how much water would have been lost?” asked Clr Spadino.
