MAD Knitters give back to the community

Knitting each day keeps the coldness away.

The Make A Difference (MAD) Knitters of Edenvale’s Christians In Action, started by Ms Anika De Beer, identified two needs in the community that could help one another.

The organisation invites everyone to its workshops to assist and learn how to knit.

There will be a knitathon on July 25, from 10am. It will take place at 10 Barbara Street in Edenglen.

The group, now under the leadership of Ms Marlene Mitchley, is in its 15th year of action.

They meet on the first Saturday of every month in the Janet Brown Hall of the Edenvale Methodist Church.

Altogether, about 70 women contribute to the outreach programme.

All the materials come from donations.

At the monthly meeting, women select what they will need when they have decided what to make. The finished products are brought to the next meeting.

These are then distributed to where there is a need. Knitters make booties, beanies, blankets and Mother Thérèsa vests for newborns at government hospitals.

They also make knee-rugs and bed socks for the elderly. In addition, women who crochet make blankets and edge knitted blankets and baby comforters. Sewers make children’s clothes for orphanages and AIDS children’s homes.

The community can assist the programme by donating items of wool, material or money to buy the extra material needed. Members of the community may also volunteer to knit and sew.

The knitters of Edenvale have thus also been able to collect plastic bottle tops.

This venture bought new wheelchairs, of which four have already been donated.
