SA youngsters inspired to move forward

Since June has been declared Youth Month, South Africa will be focusing on its youth this month.

This year marks the 38th anniversary of the June 16, 1976, student uprising when young people protested against the imposition of Afrikaans by the Apartheid government as a medium of instruction.

The uprising ended tragically, with hundreds of young people being killed.

Since June has been declared Youth Month, South Africa will be focusing on its youth this month.

The month will be celebrated under the theme, “Youth moving South Africa Forward”, which will see a number of events planned throughout the country by both government and the National Youth Development Agency (NYDA).

The NYDA executive chairperson, Yershen Pillay said, ”This year, we celebrate 20 years of democracy following our victory over the brutal and oppressive apartheid regime in 1994. We also salute all our fallen heroes who sacrificed so much for what we have today.”

The Arts and Culture Minister, Nathi Mthethwa, said the strategic objectives include educating the youth about their history and heritage, and the role played by young people in the struggle for national liberation by reflecting on the events of 1976.

The celebrations will also include the annual history education tour and numerous social dialogues across the country.
