SAPS busts Dowerglen crystal meth lab

Officers were following up on information received which led them to a town-house complex on Juniper Street.

The Edenvale SAPS uncovered a crystal meth manufacturing operation in Dowerglen Extension 4, Edenvale, on Friday night.

The manufacturing laboratory was valued at R1-million.

One man, living in the house, was arrested.

Officers were following up on information received which led them to a town-house complex on Juniper Street.

When officers arrived at the house, the man tried to escape but fell from the third storey of the building, injuring his ankle.

According to information received, the man was previously arrested in Edenvale for running a similar operation at a venue in the Avenues.

The acting spokesperson for the Edenvale SAPS, Lieutenant Colonel Robbie Roberts, thanked the Savika armed response K9 Unit for the involvement in the bust.

“Specialised K9’s were used to identify other places in the house where drugs were stashed,” said Lt Col Roberts.

The father of the man arrested told the NEWS he was heartbroken.

“I just do not know what to do with this young man any more,” the father said.

The NEWS cannot, at this stage, name the suspect as he has yet to enter a plea in court.

The SAPS recovered drug manufacturing paraphernalia inside the house, as well as chemicals used in the manufacturing of crystal meth.

The man appeared in the Germiston Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

At the time of going to print, the outcome of the court proceedings was not known.
