Tariffs will increase in Johannesburg

Unemployed youth and senior citizens are urged to apply for benefits.

During his budget speech, Clr Makhubo announced that water and sewage tariffs would increase by 14 percent, electricity by 12.19 percent and eight percent more for refuse removal.

He said property rates will increase by six percent.

Clr Makhubo encouraged the city’s unemployed youth and senior citizens to apply for benefits.

“Pensioners with a gross monthly income of less than R7 850 will get 100 percent rebates on property rates. Those with income higher than R7 850 but less than R13 457 qualify for a 50 percent rebate.

“Child-headed households with a property value not exceeding R2-million will receive a 100 percent rebate on property rates. All households will receive 6 kilolitres of free water every month. A subsidised water tariff structure is in place for residents on prepaid meters.

“A subsidised sanitation and sewerage tariff structure is applicable to those on prepaid meters. Residential properties valued at less than R200 000 will receive free refuse removal services,” he said.
