Create awareness to improve child safety

Being a parent is not easy.

Parents have become more concerned about their children’s safety.

The list of concerns parents have regarding the well-being of their children has become endless.

Henning Jacobs, the trauma support co-ordinator at ER24, said parents need to spend more time with their children.

“The number one problem these days is that many parents do not spend enough time with their children,” he said.

Furthermore, parents should also remember not to be overprotective. Rather than preventing a child from going everywhere they want to go, assess the situation first.

This provides for trust and a more open relationship.

Although the internet, cellular phones and social media have advantages, there are dangers as well.

“One of the most common dangers posed to children is sexual predators and people who abduct children,” said Mr Jacobs.

In addition to creating a safer environment from a parent’s perspective, adults should make children aware of issues like abuse, violence and sexual assault.

This will ultimately keep children safer because their parents are more involved.
