Robbery suspect, brother arrested

A man arrested for trying to buy his brother's way from prison

While trying to help his brother escape arrest, a suspect and his brother were arrested on Sunday, May 10, shortly after 1pm.

According to the Bedfordview SAPS communications officer, Sergeant Mduduzi Nhlabathi, police officers were patrolling along the N12 West when they noticed a suspicious truck just before the Edenvale off ramp.

“The truck had a bolt cutter on its roof. The officers ordered the driver to stop. When they wanted to search the truck, the driver told the officers there were stolen items inside. He offered to bribe the officers,” said Sgt Nhlabathi.

He said clothes worth more than R140 000 were discovered.

“The men did not have any proof of payment or invoices for the clothes. The driver and his crew were taken to the Germiston SAPS to be detained,” he said.

As the police were taking statements, another man arrived and offered a bribe to the police officers.

“He said he was a brother to the driver. He offered R15 000 to the police if they ‘make the case vanish’. He was then arrested. He is facing a charge of bribing a police officer,” said Sgt Nhlabathi.
