Modderfontein shows off on International Museum Day

Modderfontein, has more history than what is known.

In support of International Museum Day, visitors were welcomed at the Modderfontein Heritage Precinct by Mr Keith Martin last week.

Mr Martin showed the heritage arm of the Modderfontein Conservation Society, while a further 40 or more visited the museum and historic Franz Hoenig Haus.

Mr Martin led two walks through the area, which included views of most of Modderfontein’s ‘living monuments’, including the Old Laboratorium and the Weather Station at the Moddercrest Office Park.

Each walk lasted over two hours and left most visitors with new insight about the varied history of Modderfontein.

Many realised that the picturesque and desirable little village had been built to house the employees of the biggest dynamite factory in the world, an enterprise that was responsible for the establishment and prosperity of Kempton Park and Edenvale.

The day was a huge success, as over 50 people were treated to a walk around at the site.
