Running in aid of animals

PETS works hand-in-hand with the people of impoverished areas to assist them to care for their animals, and to improve the lives of all township animals.

Two phenomenal women, Hazel Moller and Michelle Mareë, who are local Bedforview residents, have taken the time to do a good deed.

Hazel and Michelle hope to raise R100 000 at the Ten10 event for Pet Empowerment in Townships (PETS).

This organisation strives to improve the lives of animals in townships and poor communities by working with the community to improve the lives of these disadvantaged animals.

PETS, founded by Anoux Massey in 2007, provides daily meals, warm shelters, regular inoculations, sterilisations and veterinarian care during emergencies. The initiative also rehomes those animals that are unwanted, unloved or lost.

Hazel and Michelle aim to raise the funds by completing 10 Comrades distances in 10 consecutive days from May 22 to 31.

It effectively entails running 90 kilometres every day for 10 days, with the Comrades Marathon on May 31, being the final distance to run.

“When I run, I often contemplate why I have been so blessed, and last year when I did the Double Washie for charity, I realised I am only blessed so that I can pass my blessing on. So why choose to help PETS?Well, I am always finding lost or injured animals when I run,” said Hazel.

“The real reason is because I am doing this for the animals. For all the animals that are sitting in cold shelters who have no-one that loves them, that are abused and killed every day by people in cars and trucks and those used for money-making schemes.

“I am doing this for all the pets I have found dead on the road during my runs, whom I have picked up and taken to the vet hoping to give owners closure. This is to show those people who turn a blind eye that there are people in this world who make a difference. This is how I want to show my love and respect for all animals. This is for the charity PETS, which make a difference,” said Michelle.
