Vehicle related theft cases increase

Criminals will target areas where there are many vehicles parked

Theft of, and out of, motor vehicles remains a concern for members of the Edenvale SAPS.

Recent trends indicate that most vehicles are stolen in Edenvale over weekends.

“Criminals will target areas where there are many vehicles parked,” said the acting spokesperson for the Edenvale SAPS, Lieutenant Colonel Robbie Roberts.

He said these areas include house parties.

“Often we find that there is not enough parking inside the premises and visitors are forced to park on pavements. This creates an easy targets for criminals,” said Lt Col Roberts.

He said residents who are expecting a large number of guests to visit their house should contact their security provider to ensure adequate and visible security will be available.

In addition, a number of smash-and-grab hot spots have again surfaced in Edenvale.

“We are unable to pinpoint a single area which is more targeted,” said Lt Col Roberts.

He urged motorists to not leave valuables lying around in their cars.

“Put handbags, laptops, cellular phones and tablets in the boot of your car when your are travelling anywhere,” said Lt Col Roberts.

Another growing problem is that of motorists who talk on the phone while stopped at traffic lights.

“By doing this, you are not being alert and are not paying attention to your surroundings,” said Lt Col Roberts.

He added that both the smash-and-grab offender and the motorist are at fault in such a situation.

“It is still against the law to talk on the phone while parked at a traffic light,” he said.

Residents are urged to report all suspicious activity to the Edenvale SAPS sector vehicles.
