10 arrested for truck hijacking

10 men appeared in different courts last week, following a truck hijacking on the R21, just before the Olifantsfontein off ramp on May 4, shortly after 1pm.

The Sebenza SAPS communications officer, Constable Sharon Tsotsotso, said the men were travelling in three cars and robbed a truck transporting cellular phones and laptops.

She said the suspects, between the ages of 32 and 49, fled in different directions.

Const Tsotsotso said two AK47s and an undisclosed number of pistols were recovered during the arrests.

“They were using an Audi, BMW X5 and a Golf 7. The X5 had three occupants escorting the truck. They were arrested in Alexander. The four who were in the Audi were arrested in Newtown. The three suspects in the Golf 7 were arrested near the Modderfontein dam,” she said.

Const Tsotsotso said the arrests were made after the SAPS received information about a hijacking in progress.

“A car chase ensued with police officers following the suspects who had fled in different directions. The Golf 7 was cornered in Modderfontein, after a shootout with the police. Three men were arrested and an AK47 was recovered,” she said.

She said the second AK47 was recovered in another arrest.

Const Tsotsotso said one man was injured during the shootout with the SAPS in Modderfontein.

“The injured suspect was taken to hospital under police guard while others were arrested at the scene,” she said.
