Residents call for traffic circle in Oriel

Motorists in Bedfordview have expressed concerns over their fellow motorists alleged disregard for the rules of the road.

Motorists in Bedfordview have expressed concerns over their fellow motorists’ disregard for the rules of the road.

Residents have called for the installation of speed humps as well as traffic circles in some parts of the area.

“People drive past here like they are on the highwaResidents said the Kloof and Talisman roads intersection is a concern to them as motorists do not honour the stop sign.y, some without even slowing down to check whether or not it is safe to drive past,” said a resident who did not want to be named.

Another resident, Mr Peters Shibambu who uses the same route to get to work, said a traffic circle would not be of much help.

“I cannot see how this will change things. I don’t think some motorists even know what they are supposed to do at a traffic circle.

“Take the Talisman and Nicol roads intersections, they still don’t slow down. In fact, if you dare yield to allow the person first to arrive at the circle to pass, those behind you will hoot and throw tantrums.

“I believe all that is needed is for people to go back to their K53 and learn the rules of the road and for traffic lights to rather be installed,” said Mr Shibambu.

The ward 20 councillor, Clr Jill Humphreys, said she sent a request to the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM) for a traffic circle to be built at the Kloof and Talisman roads intersection.

During a recent monthly meeting of the Bedfordview Community Police Forum (BCPF), Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) Chief Superintendent Bob Motshabi said his officers are often at the intersection issuing fines to motorists breaking the law.
