Relocation of services for Laurie Road circle

During the construction of the circle there will be traffic diversions in place and all relevant notices will be displayed.

It is hoped that construction of a traffic circle at the intersection of Laurie and Aitken roads will commence again in six weeks.

Once it has begun, the circle will take an estimated four to five months to complete.

“It is to be noted that the relocation of several services is what has delayed the project,” said the ward 18 councillor, Clr Heather Hart.

During the construction of the circle, there will be traffic diversions in place and all relevant notices will be displayed.

“Residents must be reminded that the installation of a traffic calming circle was proposed by our Roads Planning Department in order to slow down traffic coming into this dangerous curve and also to facilitate access into Laurie Road from Aitken and Cecil Auret roads due to Laurie Road becoming increasingly busy,” said Clr Hart.

She added that it also needed to be pointed out that until Gauteng Province completes the K115, which was planned to connect the R24 highway to Modderfontein Road, Laurie Road would continue to take excessive traffic, particularly by heavy duty vehicles.

“This situation is, of course, exacerbated by vehicles using Edenvale as a thoroughfare to avoid e-tolls,” said Clr Hart.

“It is for this reason that I have requested further traffic calming measures in the form of a circle at the Laurie and Hubert Matthew intersection and the installation of a traffic light in Aileen Road,” she said.

The roads planning department has agreed to undertake the necessary investigations for further traffic calming measures to be implemented.

“There are many roads in Edenvale which have become death traps, more due to motorists not obeying the rules of the road, but unfortunately due to the classification and nature of those roads traffic calming measures cannot be implemented,” Clr Hart said.
