Bezuidenhout Valley resident, Ms Toni Mngoma (26), is a semi-finalist in the Miss Commonwealth 2015 South Africa Pageant.

Toni, originally from KwaZulu-Natal, attended the Gordon Road School for Girls Primary School in Durban and completed her schooling at Parktown High School for Girls. Her family moved to Johannesburg in 1997.

She works as a receptionist and is also a vice president for her church.

After completing her matric, Toni attended Varsity College, where she completed an events management qualification. Toni made her debut in beauty pageants in high school, where she entered a Model of the Year pageant and made it to the top 10.

While at Varsity College, she entered the Miss Varsity College pageant and was crowned second princess.

She is currently studying through UNISA for a Bachelor of Arts in History.

“This year’s pageant beneficiary is the Pink Drive Breast Awareness organisation. Its mission is to spread early breast cancer detection to save lives and create awareness. The Pink Drive is a worthy cause that is close to my heart,” said Toni.

“As a black South African woman, it is my mission to educate women of the same colour and background, as this topic is often taboo or uncommon in the average black household,” said Toni.

“My role in assisting the Pink Drive is to spread the word about the organisation on social media, print media and radio stations and to raise funds for the charity and corporate wellness events.”

“I chose to enter Miss Commonwealth South Africa particularly because it’s a new and fresh pageant in South Africa, but which is well known internationally,” said Toni.

The finale will take place at the Lyric Theatre at Gold Reef City on September 12.

The pageant empowers young women with the knowledge to bring about change to communities in need.

The winner will depart to London in November to represent South Africa at the international pageant. All 53 Commonwealth member states are invited to send their representatives to compete for the prestigious titles. Through the Commonwealth pageants, a platform is created for women of all ages to become charity and culture ambassadors within South Africa, and the broader international community.
