Residents concerned about open storm water drain

Ms Glenda Prinsloo said even though the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) sent a team to cover the drain, the work was not done properly.

The storm water drain in Highgate and Jules streets is still a cause for concern for parents living along Highgate Street in Jeppestown.

On February 11, 2014, the EXPRESS reported about a five-year-old boy who fell into a storm water drain by accident while walking with his grandmother on February 3.

“Thank God I was holding his hand as we were walking,” said Ms Vanessa Andrews at the time.

More than a year later, the storm water drain is still not closed properly.

Ms Glenda Prinsloo said even though the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) sent a team to cover the drain, the work was not done properly.

When the EXPRESS visited the area, two water drains were covered, however the bigger drain, just 10 metres from where little Leroy Frazer fell just over a year ago, was still open.

Because of the recent rains, it was not easy to see there is a drain as it was covered with water.

Ms Prinsloo said she placed tires over the drain to cover it and prevent other children from falling in.

“At least when I put the tires there, I knew that children would not fall into the drain. Some of the tires have been taken away but I will continue to try and cover this drain as my worry is that a child could fall in,” said Ms Prinsloo.

Ms Busi Mlotshwa, from the JRA, said the entity is investigating the matter.

“An inquiry has been opened and the relevant people will assist in resolving the matter,” said Ms Mlotshwa.
