Department investigates pollution

Ward 20 councillor, Clr Jill Humphreys has expressed anger towards the amount of pollution that gets into the portion of Juskei River that passes through Morninghill.

The ward 20 councillor, Clr Jill Humphreys, has expressed anger towards the amount of pollution that gets into portion of the Juskei River that passes through Morninghill.

Last Tuesday, Clr Humphreys invited the NEWS for a site-visit.

Upon arrival at the stream, a bad odour could be smelt metres from the part of the river closest to Clarkson Street, where foam has also gathered and continues to rise.

Clr Humphreys also visited a local petrol station to investigate whether their car wash could be a contributing factor to the foam in the stream.

“After meeting with the manager, I was made to understand that the car wash has separating technology, but I am yet to receive the plans which indicate where the water goes from the tanks,” she added.

Environmental consultant Mr Paul Fairall, recently revealed plans to lay criminal charges against all parties responsible for the pollution.

He said he is currently seeking legal advice before laying the charges.

“I must be sure of what Section of the National Water Act (Act 36 of 1998) would apply, so that the docket can be worded properly by the SAPS and that the prosecutor and Magistrate also understand,” he said.

In a letter to, among others, Mr Fairall, the National Water and Sanitation Department’s chief directorate for Enforcement said it was investigating the matter.

Mr Fairall gave the NEWS a copy of the letter.

“Enforcement will be taken if any non-compliance is detected in terms of the National Water Act to ensure the protection of water resources,” said Mr Nigel Adams in the letter.

Clr Humphreys said she will welcome action taken against perpetrators, as pollution destroys the environment.

She added that complaints from residents included one from a woman whose parents were allegedly struggling to breathe due to the stench.
