Clr Nkomo arranges Greenstone traffic meeting

Engineer, Mr Whelan agreed that there was a need for level one road maintenance in the Greenstone area.

Several traffic concerns around Greenstone were highlighted last week when the ward 32 councillor, Clr Bongani Nkomo, arranged for a site visit.

During the site visit with traffic engineer Mr Owen Whelan, Clr Nkomo described many of the issues which had been reported to him over the last few weeks.

Among the complaints was a broken barricade along Greenstone Place.

According to reports, a truck collided with the barricade which uprooted the installation.

The barricade has not been repaired since the crash occurred and a portion of it lay in the road.

“Motorists have to swerve to avoiding hitting the barricade,” said Clr Nkomo.

Also brought to the attention of the councillor was the need for traffic calming measures along Stoneridge Drive, as well as the lack of road markings and street names in the area.

Engineer, Mr Whelan, agreed that there was a need for level one road maintenance in the Greenstone area.

“Another concern raised by residents were the illegal manoeuvres motorists perform to access the Greenstone Gate complex,” said Clr Nkomo.

He asked whether a stop street could be installed to allow for traffic to enter and exit the complex, without residents having to drive up one ways or make u-turns on Modderfontein Road.

Mr Whelan said the installation of a stop street, or another set of traffic lights, would hinder the flow of traffic from Modderfontein Road.

He attributed this to the width of the road and the number of lanes.

“If we install a stop street or a traffic light for the few residents who need to turn into the complex, we will have serious accidents every weekend,” said Mr Whelan.

It was agreed that a suitable alternative would be sought.

Clr Nkomo hopes to host several other visits to areas of concern in his ward.
