Clr Jill Humphreys advises how residents can help displaced foreign nationals

In addition, the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM) will be putting up marquees at the site to provide shelter in the interim.

The ward 20 councillor, Clr Jill Humphreys, has condemned the recent spate of attacks on foreign nationals.

She further declared her support for victims of xenophobic attacks in neighbouring areas, like the Makause Informal Settlement, near Primrose.

She said there are contingency plans in place to ensure the safety of those affected by the violent strikes against foreign nationals.

“Together with disaster management, we have identified places where relief tents will be set up should the need arise. Those admitted there will undergo formal registration,” she said.

Clr Humphreys said the tents, which will be set up on sports grounds, will be a temporary measure.

On Friday, April 17, Clr Humphreys also set up collection points at the Methodist Church in Bedfordview.

“We asked residents to donate items like nappies, blankets and non-perishable food items. The response has been amazing. People are touched and have come out to help those targeted and affected by this,” said Clr Humphreys.

Meanwhile, the Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management teams remained on standby to assist.

On Thursday night, 1 030 people were recorded and registered at the Germiston City Hall and Elsburg Community Centre. Another transmission site operated from Primrose.

In addition, the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM) will be putting up marquees at the site to provide shelter in the interim.

The mayoral spokesperson, Mr Zweli Dlamini said, “We have also identified a site in Springs where, once basic amenities and lodgings are in place, we will be moving those who have been registered.”

The EMM will also be in contact with various NGOs to request humanitarian assistance.

At the time of going to press, it was unclear whether the displaced foreign nationals would be returning to Makause.

Some Bedfordview residents have vowed to heed the call for help by donating the items needed.
