Dagga possession lands men in hot water

Two men have been arrested by the Bedfordview SAPS in Elandsfontein for possession and dealing in dagga.

Two men have been arrested by the Bedfordview SAPS in Elandsfontein for possession of and dealing in dagga.

According to the Bedfordview SAPS spokesperson, Sergeant Mduduzi Nhlabathi, the suspects were arrested in two separate incidents.

“An officer on patrol in the area spotted a man selling something that looked green in a clear plastic bag. The officer then called his colleague to help search the man,” said Sgt Nhlabathi.

He added that the officers found the man in possession of three plastic bags containing the drug.

“The suspect took the officer to where he was keeping more of the dagga. He was also found with R290 in cash in his possession,” said Sgt Nhlabathi.

The man was charged with both possession and dealing in dagga.

The second suspect was arrested when Constable George Manala was patrolling the area in the early hours of the morning.

“Const Manala arrested the suspect with dagga weighing 2,20 grams and detained him with no injuries,” said Sgt Nhlabathi.

Const Manala was awarded the Top Cop of the Year Award after winning the title for five consecutive months between April and August 2014.

At the time, he said, “In April I arrested 18 people, 10 of whom were in possession of drugs. In May, I made 23 arrests, 14 of which were drug-related. In June, I arrested 16 people, 12 of whom were in possession of drugs. Between July and August, I managed to arrest 33 suspects, 31 of whom were in possession of drugs.”

Sgt Nhlabathi said the SAPS is closing in on drug abuse in the area and urged members of the community to blow the whistle on such activities.

“It is when we work together as a community that we can rid our area of criminals,” he added.
