“Having said this, I am aware corruption is a cancer that is ravaging our institutions and communities. In this regard we have moved swiftly to intensify our anti-corruption and fraud programme,” said executive mayor of Ekurhuleni, Clr Mondli Gungubele during the State of the City Address on Wednesday.

Clr Gungubele said a clean audit achieved by EMM for the year 2013/14 set a pattern of how the city should be conducting its business going forward.

“The attainment of the clean audit assures citizens and investors that the metro is serious about good governance.”

He said for EMM to maintain good governance, it must ensure financial statements truthfully present the financial position of the metro, account for the services delivered to its citizens and comply with legislation such as the Municipal Finance Management Act (MFMA) and policies approved by council.

Furthermore Clr Gungubele said the metro has made an undertaking to have all of its managers vetted.

“Most of our managers have undergone vetting by the State Security Agency and the next level of management and officials holding critical roles will soon follow. We also intend to extend the programme to politicians.”
