EMM reports positive results on HIV and TB endevours

Ekurhuleni ‘s tuberculosis cure rate stands at 87,6 percent, surpassing the national rate of 85 percent.

The executive mayor of Ekurhuleni, Clr Mondli Gungubele, reported to council during the State of the City Address on Wednesday.

“Our dedication to beat TB was recently acknowledged by the provincial government which awarded us the Gauteng Trophy for the best TB Cure Rate in the Province for the second consecutive year.”

Clr Gungubele said the metro also made great strides in HIV/Aids treatment.

“The robust approach of the city through its HIV and Aids programme has contributed significantly to the reduction of new infections from 27 percent in 2011 to 14 percent by December last year.”

He told council that the metro will continue its comprehensive strategy to tackle HIV/Aids which encompasses awareness, treatment and home based care.

“In this regard all our primary health care facilities are implementing the anti-retroviral therapy programme with 15 1042 patients initiated into the anti-retroviral therapy between July 2011 and December 2014,” said Clr Gungubele.
