This is according to the executive mayor of Ekurhuleni, Clr Mondli Gungubele, who updated council on the Intergrated Rapid Transport Network (IRPTN), during his State of the City Address on March 25.

“The section of the route between Esangweni and R25 is progressing well with the commencement of construction of the trunk route. The first 5 kilometres of the dedicated bus lanes of the trunk route is expected to be completed by June 30. During the 2013/2014 financial year a total of 7 kilometres of the IRPTN complementary routes were constructed and upgraded in Tembisa and Rondebult Road in Boksburg,” he said.

Also part of the (IRPTN), Clr Gungubele, announced the construction of non-motorised transport infrastructure.

“To date 18,8 kilometres of pedestrian and cyclist paths have been constructed in Tembisa, Kempton Park, Dawn Park, Freeway Park and Rondebult,” he said.

The size of the non-motorized infrastructure will be three meters wide allowing cyclists and pedestrians to share the space with motor vehicles.

“The same walkways are universally allowing people with special needs, be it the visually impaired or wheelchair bound persons to use the same little or no assistance.”

Clr Gungubele also announced the construction of lay-bys to allow buses and taxis to load and off-load passengers without obstructing traffic.
